Massage therapy, carried out by a highly trained professional, is a scientific technique causing relaxation, stimulation, easing of mental and physical tension, alleviation of aches, the breaking up of fatty tissues and muscle spasms, and the improvement of circulation throughout the body. In the practice of their special healing and re-creative art, massage therapists who are thoroughly trained in the scientific application of the age-old Swedish procedure, work from the head and feet to the heart…”the natural path of the human circulatory system.”

Massage helps the body to restore itself to a more comfortable feeling and, in turn, helps the body to rehabilitate itself from any disease or other malfunction. Many other benefits are derived from this skillful kneading and massaging of skin, muscles and tissues, including a reduction of strain on the heart and body fluids in the legs an the arms.

This branch of the healing arts is a natural treatment recognized from the earliest days of history and many physicians today have studied its application and recommend it as an additional form of medical therapy.

Generally speaking anyone can enjoy the benefits of this ancient art and a prescription is not necessary. Many hospitals, spas and health clubs offer massage, and massage therapists across the country conduct private practices in their own offices. In addition, service is sometimes available in the home for the disabled, children, or the elderly.

THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF MASSAGE

  • Massage dilates or opens up blood vessels, improving the circulation and relieving congestion.

  • Massage relaxes muscle spasm and relieves tension.

  • Massage acts as a "mechanical cleanser" pushing along lymph and hastening the elimination of wastes and toxic debris.

  • Massage separates muscle fibers, undoing or preventing the formation of adhesions.

  • Massage improves muscle tone and helps prevent or delay muscular atrophy resulting from forced inactivity.

  • Massage compensates lack of exercise and muscular contraction in persons who because of injury, illness or age are forced to remain inactive. In these cases, massage helps return venous blood to the heart and so eases the strain on this vital organ.

  • Massage encourages the retention of nitrogen, phosphorous and sulphur necessary for tissue repair  in persons convalescing from bone fractures.

  • Massage may have a sedative, stimulating or even exhausting effects on the nervous system depending on the type of and length of massage treatment given.

  • Massage stretches connective tissue, improves its circulation and nutrition and so breaks down or prevents the formation of adhesions and reduces danger of fibrosis.

  • Massage improves the circulation and nutrition of joints and hastens the elimination of harmful particles. It helps lessen inflammation and swelling in joints and so alleviates pain.

  • Massage helps eliminate edema (or dropsy) of the extremities.

  • Massage empties the larger ducts and channels and so decreases the autointoxication resulting from the re-absorption of toxic materials in these channels resulting from inflammation or constipation.

HOW TO RECEIVE A MASSAGE?

Because massage is not a common part of our contemporary cultural experience, many people do not get most out of a massage through lack of knowing a few simple do's and don'ts:

The recipient's only job is to relax, to relax as completely as possible. For those who find this hard to do, here are a couple  of hints: breathe deeply and regularly, stressing the exhalation; allow the body and its parts to became very heavy and sink into the table ; as the therapists hands locate areas of tension, consciously try to let go and relax these areas.

Talk, for the most part, is distracting and unnecessary.

However, feel free to give feedback if any manipulation is uncomfortable or if you would like something done longer or differently. It's you who has come into this encounter to feel good.

Just lie there. Allow the therapist to move your limbs into whatever position is required. Be a rag doll. Don't try to be helpful. Simply receive. The therapist is a trained professional who knows what he or she is doing and will not hurt you. Follow his or her hints or suggestions with confidence.

Close your eyes. See with your sense of touch. Feel yourself as the center of the universe.

HOT STONE MASSAGE

Hot Stone massage is one of the fastest growing massage techniques throughout our country and across international waters. Many people are seeking a connection to "Body-Mind-Soul" in their everyday life.

Stone Therapy offers a peaceful way in which to return to ones true nature. This form of bodywork involves the use of stones heated to about 125 F degrees  applied to the body in various ways to bring about relief to stiff sore muscles that many of us deal with on a daily basis.

The heating and gentle rubbing of the stones relieves muscular pain, relaxes pinched nerves and aids those suffering from fibromyalgia.  As with regular massage, relaxation boosts the immune system.
